| How to clean up manga scans quick and advance way |
|
On this tutorial I will share my simple technique on pulling the artwork out from those manga scans to be able to re-use them for scanlations . Cleaning those scans is easy and will only take you 3-6 mins per page, 10-20 mins if the scans are ugly. (I'll be honest with that coz I did search for the ugliest scans ever and try to clean it, and still the final output is ugly.) I did apply for a cleaner from one of the outstanding scanlations and I did pass their exams, then I back out after that ^^. It was out of curiosity. (it was way back a year ago) Ok let me show you how to clean manga scans properly. First of all download a sample of manga scans/RAW on mangahelpers.com. for this tutorial I'm going to use naruto's last 2 pages of chapter 437.
Open up page 16 on photoshop, then grab your crop tool [C] and expand the whole page, it doesn't matter if you expand it too much, its better than too short.
Then open your page 17 and combine the two of them.
Then select the layer where the page 17 resides, grab your marquee tool and delete the excess part of the pages, do the same on page 16.
Surely you would come up with a visible cut between them, so your goal is to blend them perfectly by using the clone stamp tool.
Make sure you make a new layer before you do your cloning stuff, never embed your clone on the original coz it's no turning back. When you are cloning from another layer make sure to check the ‘sample all layers' option.
After doing the cloning stuff, merge them. its time for us to pull out those Art and embed it to another paper ^^, yes we don't want the grayish background so we need to pull out those artwork using my favorite masking partner, go to select >color range. And select the color you wanted to pull out and that would be any kind of black ink.
After you press Ok, mask it, for more info about color range and masking you can read my previews article here, when you are done masking you will be having a transparent background, at this point we have already done pulling out the artwork all you need to do is add new layer underneath and filled it with white.
then you can add curve adjustment, to make the art darker.
Time for removing those Japanese scripts , select your mask [Alt Click], then grab your brush tool reset your palette [D] and press [X] to swap your fore ground and background palette. Then paint it using your brush tool to mask the area.
Then select the artwork and add some fresh effects by adding drop shadows and inner shadows, the drop shadows must have less than 20 opacity, zero distance, zero spread and 3 to 5 size, the inner shadows must have 49 or less opacity, 5 distance, zero choke and 5 size.
If there are some unnecessary noise on the final output just select the mask and go to filter > noise > dust and scratches to fix them. I made a video for this tutorial, this video has not been sped up, it was my actual speed for using photoshop and my first time using adobe premiere so please bear with me I'm a complete beginner, watch my video on how to to clean up manga here ^^. I'm a big fan of naruto so please if you appreciate their manga please purchase an original copy if they are available at your area.

Woooow... I've read a lot of guides and tutorials for cleaning manga but they all have this re-draw, level adjustment , inking, reborder etc etc
but I never saw this one yet, your technique stands out, it was like... copy the artwork and paste it to another paper and thats it no re-draw no inking no reborder. written by princess , March 08, 2009
I'm back! =b
I watch the video and I'm a little confuse , I don't see you selecting any tools on the tool bar. XD
@Mihashi
it depends on the Raw, but I'm sure you don't want to recreate the page, the more it looks more like the original the better. @princess >_< I am used to shortcuts I learn to use them 'always' rather than selecting them on tool bar, it's one of the best practices, and I'm aware of those confusions that's the reason I wrote them here ^^. written by tasty , March 09, 2009
its been a while.. you did a great post again, I like your new style of posting much better if you can prepare a video everytime you made a photoshop tutorial.

Great tutorial!! (2 thumbs up!!) written by De , March 21, 2009
That's awesome! I was wondering though if you could do the same thing on gimp too.
I don't know gimp but I think it can, just use the same concept on how I did it here using gimp tools ^^
This is by far the fastest, easiest to follow instructions I've encountered on how to clean up images. Great job! Thanks for sharing this!

D ko tlga maintindihan ung sa color range banda.. San ako pipindot? Anu pipindutin ko? @_@
color range is a tool to pick certain colors on your subject, on this tutorial we are picking all black inks, click on the eyedropper tool just under the cancel button on the color range window and start picking the black inks.

Can you tell me in more detail about the second time you use the color range in the video and what you do after pressing ok???? Thx
oh, the second one is to make the mask more sharper, after using color range press [D] to reset Foreground/Background then press [alt del] as many as you want it's the shortcut for filling the area with Foreground color.

its a different kickass way to clean a manga, and u r really fast. is there any way to remove all the white spots in black area(vise versa).
example in this page the white and black dots are prominent. colour masking aint helping me. http://mangahelpers.com/downloads/read-online/34645/3
That's a nice job, for such abominable scans. But as you said, the best way to end up with good results is to start with good scans.
@akash
use the dust and scratches filter on your mask after you selected it using color range then ctrl select the mask and filled it with black ink. I think need to make a tutorial on this. (I did use it here too but I didn't explain it that much). written by kavuto93 , July 07, 2009
it's a great tutorial but i can't use it because photoshop elements doesn't have a color range tool. can anyone help me clean with elements i have looked at about 10 tutorials and they all use something that elements doesn't have.
it's time for you to buy a photoshop software if you think you'll be taking the photography/graphic/web design seriously.

If only cleaners are considered a profession I guess I could be one of them ^^. But too bad it was a voluntary job which means you gain nothing from doing the job, but for sure there are lots of photoshop newbies who wanted to learn how to clean a manga and contribute some of their free time.
